I was very excited to be commissioned by Oxford University Press to illustrate the cover of the latest edition of Alice in Wonderland. This is a book I know well and had done some personal illustrations for previously. So this was a bit of a dream project. I was pretty busy with other commissions at the time and worked fast to get it done between other commissions. We are all really pleased with the result.

I discovered Roland whilst browsing the internet one morning desperately searching for someone to do my cover for a fabulous new edition of The Adventures in Alice and Wonderland, one of our Oxford Children’s Classics ... He was the quickest and most efficient illustrator I have ever had the pleasure of working with. Everyone including our sales and marketing teams absolutely love this cover and it’s getting fabulous feedback in the trade.

This cover is a pretty simple, open and clean. The illustration has a lot of space to really shine. So a lot of attention went into the details, expressions and textures. Doing the typography was a special part of this commission. Usually this part is done by the publishers designers but as it is so much a part of the illustration here, I was very keen to do it myself. I had a lot of fun playing with the little illustrative flourishes. Did you spot the pocket watch?
